In 1896, feeling the need for Church Services in English. A Group of English-Speaking Residences of the Paarl Valley under Mr James Gribble. (Born near Cape Town 27 January 1863 - Paarl 23 January 1943) started Sunday Afternoon Worship in “Die Strooidak Kerk” in Main Road.
At first the group was few in number and depended on Priests/Ministers from Cape Town and surroundings to Worship and celebrate Holy Communion from time to time.
In the May of 1900 James Gribble approached the Church Leaders of “Die Strooidak Kerk” to have a "Celebrate Service" to Praise God for the “Relief of Mafeking” on 17 May 1900. This did not go down well with the Afrikaans speaking Church Leaders and the English Group were asked to Find an alternate Venue for their Services.
On 17th Feb 1901 the first Services of Worship was held. The Current Congregation was Officially founded. It was decided to become a Congregational Church as the Congregationalists was able to provide a minister Straight away.
The First Minister was Namely Rev Alban Health. He was the Minister between 1901 & 1906. The Church Building was Completed in 1902 on the current site. Between 1906 & 1918 the Minister was Rev W.H. Evans. In 1930 it was decided to Build a Hall to house Functions and the Sunday School. Which was opened on 20 December 1930 by AJ Lewis
The first musical instrument used was a small harmonium which was installed when the Church building was opened for worship in 1902. This was replaced some years later by an excellent pipe organ which stood against the South wall of the church and, was played from a position coinciding with that of the present pulpit.
On May the 8th, 1942, a short but violent thunderstorm passed over Paarl and lightning struck the Church roof at a point above the organ. A disastrous fire followed which was not extinguished until the organ and much of the Church furniture had been destroyed.
Following this tragic loss the Church worshipped for some while in the Masonic Hall, and when it returned to its restored premises a small American organ was installed pending the purchase of a new instrument of greater capabilities.
Eventually a Minshall electric organ was obtained, though the idea of a pipe organ was never lost sight of. In 1955 it was decided to purchase an instrument from Messrs. Cooper Gill & Tomkins for the sum of £1,850. Immediately an Organ fund', which had been in existence for some years, was revived, two organisers were appointed, and it was decided to try and raise the whole amount in a year. A set-back occurred during the year, when it was found that the organ loft would increase the total price from £1,850 up to £2,250. Undeterred, the Church pressed on, and by the end of September 1955, the total required was not only reached, but exceeded.
In September 1996, Just after the Church Centennial, 'Auret Street' Congregational Church decided to Unite with the Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa and Paarl United Church was formed.
